The No.1 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) of Shidao Bay nuclear power plant, which is fully independently developed by China, achieved criticality in east China's Shandong Province on Sunday.
This is another milestone the nuclear power plant made in this year after completing cold and hot functional tests for twin reactors, as well as its first fuel loading.
Its unit is expected to start generating power within this year.
With an installed capacity of 200,000 kilowatts, the HTGR of Shidao Bay nuclear power plant under China Huaneng Group started the construction at the end of 2012. It is the first Pebble Bed Modular HTGR with the fourth-generation advanced nuclear power system features in the world.
"We've mastered a series of global and industrial bottleneck key technologies, and verified their engineering transformation. Features like the inherent safety of HTGR will hopefully expand nuclear power from coastal areas to inland regions," said Wang Wenzong, vice president of the China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd.
