THINGS PEOPLE HATE ABOUT LIVING IN DENMARK THAT WE LOVE
#Denmark #Danmark #LivinginDenmark
We recently made a video on the hardest things about living in Denmark. We were then curious what other foreigners living in Denmark thought were the biggest challenges to Danish life. We found some common answers that did not bother us and a few others that we really like.
We decided to cover these things in their own video about the things that people hate about living in Denmark, that we actually love!
Weather
Okay, it’s not Greece - but it’s not Siberia
There are cold snaps of freezing temperatures in the winter, it’s windy, it’s always a little damp and dreary but at least you know what to expect all year round - you never know if it will get super nice in summer BUT it’s always within a few degree range of seasonal norms
The weather in PA and upstate NY is more extreme, meters of snow, hot and humid summers, random warm spells in the middle of winter, late cold snaps in May, tornadoes, hurricanes… it’s not so bad in Denmark
Darkness
The light balance is difficult, but we don’t mind the dark winters
It’s easy to sleep, we almost catch up from the summer/light season
The streets are lit up all winter with Christmas decoration
When it changes back and the days get longer - it moves fast and all of a sudden it’s the midnight sun of midsomer again
It makes you appreciate the sun when you have it and the closeness of friends and family on dark winter days….and Spain is only a short flight away
Directness
It’s nice to know where you stand
Beating around the bush and guessing intentions can be tiring
Danes can take a joke and if you have a slightly thick skin the directness is refreshing
Taxes
No one likes taxes, but we prefer a fair system with little corruption where everyone chips in what they can for a better society
High taxes mean a high standard of living, public transport and low rates of poverty and income inequality
It’s not that much more in the price than all the hidden fees in America whether it’s payroll deductions or tax/tip/handling fee for consumer items
Few Close Friends
This means that when you make a Danish friend it’s your friend til the end
Preferable to a lot of “bar friends” or inauthentic relationships - these exist in Denmark, but your close friends become family
Less to keep up with and easy to manage these relationships and really invest in people
