Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Dostoevsky Moscow House Museum Center in honour of the 200th anniversary of the great Russian writer's birth. The Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova gave the president a tour of the exhibition halls.

The memorial and historical-literary exposition of the museum tells about the life and creative path of Dostoevsky, whose family had lived at the location. During the inspection of the exhibits, Putin demonstrated his knowledge of the writer's biography.

For example, the head of state mentioned Dostoevsky's passion for roulette and recalled the year in which the writer stopped getting involved in the game.

At the end of the excursion, the president left an entry in the book of honoured guests.

"Many thanks to the organisers and devotees for preserving the memory of Fyodor Dostoevsky, a genius thinker and patriot of Russia," Putin wrote.

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was born on November 11, 1821. His work influenced the development and formation of literature and culture not only in Russia, but also abroad.

The Dostoevsky Moscow House Museum Center is located in the northern wing of the former Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor, built in 1806. At that time, the apartment of the writer's father was located there.

In various cities and towns of Russia a large-scale plan of anniversary events timed to coincide with the anniversary of Dostoevsky is being implemented by decree of the president.

The birthday of the classic author of world literature is celebrated not only in Russia, but also abroad, and 2021 has been declared by UNESCO the 'Year of Dostoevsky.'
