Stating that Nepal has become self-sufficient in hydropower in the six-month rainy season, he stressed the need to adopt a policy to encourage the use of electric vehicles and electric appliances in the kitchen.
He said that the use of electronic material will reduce the import of gas and petroleum products and improve the position of foreign exchange reserves.
Pun said that the foreign debt burden has almost doubled in the last five years.
He said that this issue is worrisome for the country's economy. Five years ago the external debt was 9 trillion, but now it has increased 100 percent to 18 trillion.
Participating in the pre-budget discussion for FY 2079/80, Pun said, "Five years ago, our external debt was as high as Rs 500 billion."
Pun said that 40 percent of GDP will go to foreign debt interest and warned that the Nepalese economy could be in trouble if this situation persists.
Talking about the collapse of Sri Lanka's economy due to higher foreign interest payments than GDP, Pun said that Nepal should learn a timely lesson from this. Pun pointed out that the main reason for the reduction in foreign exchange reserves was the increase in external debt.
